What are side effects of a tear trough filler?

With tear trough fillers, the gutters under the eyes can be filled for a fresh look. But what side effects does it actually have?

Tear trough fillers are used to fill the depth under the eyes. This is because a deep tear trough can give a tired look, despite you not being tired at all. The tear trough filler is a very thin filler that spreads nicely into the area under the eyes. Because the depth is filled, and in the process often reduces the dark discoloration as well, it gives a beautiful fresh and open look.

As with any medical or cosmetic treatment, there are potential side effects to this treatment. In order to reduce the risk of these side effects, it is very important that this treatment be performed only with proper indication. Naturally, our doctors will guide you in this and provide medical advice.

What are side effects of tear trough fillers?

  • Attracting too much fluid under the eyes is the most well-known side effect of tear trough fillers. The area under the eyes is very sensitive to moisture. If too much moisture is attracted by the filler, this can result in fluid pockets under the eyes. This is very annoying because it can cause a tired look. Fortunately, this often reduces by itself and there are solutions to remedy this.
  • Furthermore, tear trough fillers can cause temporary swelling under the eyes. This is not due to too much fluid, but to the reaction of the surrounding tissue to the filler. This often goes away within a few days of treatment.
  • Blue spots hardly ever occur after tear trough filler treatment. This is because the treatment is performed with a cannula, rather than a needle. Because a cannula has a blunt end, no vessels or other structures can be damaged. Thus, the chance of bruising under the eyes is virtually zero.

Can you prevent too much moisture under the eyes?

Before having a tear trough filler performed, a good indication is very important. After all, not everyone is a suitable candidate for this treatment. So always get good advice from an experienced and knowledgeable doctor. Do you have a good indication for tear trough fillers? Then the chance is considerably smaller that you will suffer from too much fluid under the eyes. However, the chance is never zero.

I have too much fluid under my eyes after tear trough filler treatment: now what?

This, of course, is very annoying. Fortunately, there are several ways to solve the problem. First of all, you can massage the area. This way you stimulate the body to drain the fluid in that specific area faster. The doctor will, of course, demonstrate these massage instructions. Despite this being an effective way to reduce the fluid, it can take several weeks for all the fluid to really disappear.

Is the amount of fluid under the eyes too great?

Then your body has reacted too violently to the filler and it is not suitable for you. In this case, the filler will have to be dissolved with the solvent hyaluronidase. This is done through very small punctures in the area of the filler. This is a quick method, the filler will be gone within 48 hours. Of course, the moisture that has accumulated often takes longer to disappear completely. For this, massaging is again a good tool.
