Smoking lines

Do the fine, vertical lines around your lips bother you? These so-called smoker’s lines can become increasingly visible with age, even when you keep your mouth relaxed. A hyaluronic acid-based treatment can subtly soften these lines, giving the skin around your mouth a smoother and fresher appearance.

What are smoker's lines?

Smoker’s lines are fine, vertical wrinkles that primarily appear above the upper lip but can also be visible around the lower lip. Despite their name, these lines do not occur exclusively in people who smoke.

The skin around the mouth is relatively thin and constantly in motion. Repeated muscle movements of the mouth—for example, while talking and laughing—can gradually cause fine lines to form.

In addition, as we age, the amount of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases. As a result, the skin loses firmness and elasticity, causing existing lines to become increasingly visible. Factors such as smoking, sun exposure, and genetic predisposition also play a role in this process.

How can smoker's lines be treated?

At JECT Clinics, smoker’s lines can be treated with hyaluronic acid. This involves precisely injecting small amounts of hyaluronic acid into the superficial lines around the mouth.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the skin and helps retain moisture and support the skin’s structure. By applying hyaluronic acid in a targeted manner, fine lines can be filled in and smoothed out.

The goal of this treatment is not to plump the lips, but rather to subtly refine the skin around the mouth. By working carefully with small amounts, our doctors aim for a natural result that preserves your original facial expressions.

For deeper wrinkles or reduced skin quality, a complementary skin-improving treatment may be considered.

How does the treatment proceed?

Before the treatment, the cosmetic doctor will discuss your wishes and expectations. During this consultation, they will assess the depth of the lines, the skin quality, and the anatomy of the area around the mouth.

Next, the skin is cleansed, and small amounts of hyaluronic acid are injected using a fine needle. The treatment usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

Because the area around the mouth can be sensitive, a numbing cream may be used if necessary. After the treatment, you can usually resume your daily activities right away.

What can you expect from the results?

The results of hyaluronic acid treatment are often immediately visible. The fine lines around the mouth may become less pronounced, making the skin appear smoother.

There may be slight swelling in the first few days, which means the final result cannot yet be fully assessed.

At JECT Clinics, we strive for subtle improvements that complement your natural appearance. It is especially important to have realistic expectations when it comes to deeper or long-standing wrinkles. Not all lines can disappear completely, and sometimes multiple treatments are needed to achieve the desired result.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can smoker's lines develop even if you don't smoke?
ject-arrow

Yes. Although smoking can accelerate the formation of fine lines around the mouth, smoker's lines can also develop in people who have never smoked. Skin aging, genetic predisposition, sun exposure, and repetitive mouth movements play an important role in this.

2. Will the treatment give me fuller lips?
ject-arrow

No, that is not the purpose of this treatment. When treating smoker’s lines, the hyaluronic acid is injected specifically into the fine lines around the mouth, rather than into the lips themselves. This allows wrinkles to be softened without intentionally creating additional lip volume. However, a subtle change in contour or fullness cannot be completely ruled out.

3. How long will the result remain visible?
ject-arrow

The results of the treatment are temporary. On average, the effects last about 6 to 12 months, depending on the product used and individual factors such as metabolism. The duration of the effects may vary from person to person.

4. Is the treatment painful?
ject-arrow

The skin around the mouth is relatively sensitive. The injections may therefore cause temporary sensitivity. If necessary, a numbing cream can be applied beforehand to make the treatment more comfortable.

5. What are possible side effects?

After the treatment, you may experience temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising. You may also feel slight irregularities. These usually disappear within a few days.
